It feels a bit odd to write a review on a book of book reviews, but I will try. This compilation consists of Miss O’Connor’s personal correspondence to Leo Zuber, as well as over a hundred of her book reviews, written originally for two Catholic diocesan newspapers. A majority of the books are theological in nature, and I found it fascinating to read her comments on such topics as the Reformation, agnosticism, evangelical theology, Jungian and Freudian psychoanalysis and Zen Buddhism. I admire the serious intellectual content of her faith and how this translates to her art. The most enjoyable part of this book, for Flannery O’Connor fans, will be the glimpses you catch of her sharp wit and sardonic personality. “Sent three books back, kept 2 for pleasure & the rest for penance. You sure do get in a good penitential stock.” Wouldn’t you just love to have her in your book club?

I love Miss Flannery. I will have to add this one to my queue!
Have you come across her book of collected letters, ‘The Habit of Being’? My mom found me a copy at a used book sale once, and it is one now one of my most cherished books. She often shares her theological thoughts, plus you can see glimpses of the dauntless joy with which she faced her chronic health problems.
I have! Still need to read it though – thanks for reminding me about it.
