27th & 52nd — Living for God’s Glory (Joel Beeke)

July 9th, 2010 § 0

I think that this had the potential to be a fascinating book, but failed at least for me. However, I do not blame the book for this failure, instead I blame myself. Living for God’s Glory is an introductory primer to the ideas of Calvinism as well as many of the implications for our lives; these implications were the real reason that I picked up this book – too often books that deal with Calvinism deal only with doctrine (and sometimes only soteriology), so it was nice to see a book that dealt with how we apply those doctrines to the rest of life. However, it turns out that those implications were a lot of things that I’ve interacted with before. For instance, the chapter on Calvinism and work/vocation I was able to breeze through quickly since it dovetailed in many ways with that excellent Geneva College education that I was indoctrinated with…er, taught.

Recommended for people with not a lot of experience with the Reformed faith or for Reformed youngsters who are trying to deepen and mature their faith and understanding.
