I took several writing classes in college with a favorite professor and when I graduated I had a long list of books to read that were highly recommended by him. Even though its been a few years since I’ve graduated, I haven’t gotten around to reading many of those books yet. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold by John LeCarre is off of that list. This is one of the first spy novels I have ever read. It comes out of the Cold War era and is set in Europe. Leamis’ last mission is to try to capture Mundt, who appears to be behind the murders of several British agents in Germany. And just as one would expect (especially being that it is set in the Cold War era), there are many things that are not as it seems. It is a short book, relatively speaking, but it is gripping and brilliant. It is just as Graham Greene said, it is “The best spy story I have ever read.”
